BGB distributes sewing machines in Rangpur
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has distributed sewing machines among 15 women in Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat, after completing a tailoring training programme aimed at helping disadvantaged women living in border areas become self-reliant.
Brigadier General A S M Naser, commander of the BGB Rangpur Region, attended the closing ceremony of the training at Doani High School on Thursday as the chief guest and distributed certificates and sewing machines among the trainees.
The two-week tailoring training was organised by the BGB with the aim of improving the skills of disadvantaged and underprivileged women in border areas, creating self-employment opportunities and helping them become economically and socially self-reliant. At the end of the programme, 15 women received certificates and sewing machines.
The training was organised by the BGB’s Teesta Battalion (63 BGB) at Doani High School in the border area of Hatibandha upazila, Lalmonirhat, from August 27 to September 10. Fifteen women from border areas participated in the training.
The Sector Commander of the Rangpur Sector, the commander of Teesta Battalion and other BGB officials, local dignitaries, teachers, trainers, journalists and trainees were present at the event.
Addressing the programme, the chief guest said the BGB regularly works not only to ensure border security but also for the welfare and socioeconomic development of people living in border areas.
He said stronger border security could be ensured if border residents were made economically self-reliant, aware and skilled. Such self-employment initiatives play an important role in strengthening trust, cooperation and good relations between the BGB and border communities, he added.
He urged the trained women to utilise the knowledge and skills they had acquired to contribute to the financial improvement of themselves and their families. He also expressed hope that the success of the women would encourage others in border areas to pursue self-employment.
After the ceremony, the regional commander held an exchange of views with journalists from various media outlets.
He highlighted the importance of the BGB’s various welfare initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of border residents, developing the skills of women and young people, and creating self-employment opportunities alongside ensuring border security.
Teesta Battalion authorities said a coordinated approach combining border security with the welfare and socioeconomic development of border residents would help build a safe, aware and self-reliant border community.
They expressed their commitment to continuing such welfare, skills-development and self-employment programmes in the future based on the needs and capabilities of border communities.
