Over 20,000 backlog cases disposed

A record 20,740 old cases have been disposed of by the High Court in just four working days under a special initiative aimed at reducing case backlog and improving the efficiency of the judicial system.

Commenting on the disposal of a large number of pending cases, Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal said the steps taken by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury to clear old cases in the High Court were commendable.

He expressed hope that the initiative would continue and said the Attorney General’s Office wants to work closely with the Supreme Court to reduce the backlog of cases. He added that he had already met the chief justice and placed several suggestions to address case congestion.

The Attorney General’s Office has also submitted a list of 1,400 cases for speedy disposal.
Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam said that, following directives from the chief justice, a special initiative began on May 7 to prioritize the disposal of long-pending criminal miscellaneous and writ cases on designated days each week.

The initiative aims to ensure quick justice for litigants, reduce the backlog of pending cases and bring greater dynamism to the judicial system.

According to the latest information provided by the Supreme Court spokesperson, a total of 15,172 old criminal miscellaneous cases and 5,568 old writ cases were disposed of in four working days – May 7, May 14, June 11 and June 18.

Altogether, 20,740 old cases were disposed of during the four working days, setting what officials described as a remarkable precedent in the High Court.
