Although she made her debut with a Hindi film, Tamannaah Bhatia’s success began with Telugu films. In a career spanning nearly two decades, she has established herself as a leading actress in the South Indian industry.
From that experience, Tamannaah feels that the industry is ‘a bit patriarchal’. She expressed her observation in a recent interview with Forbes India. According to her, there is a certain view of women in South Indian films, which is not very positive. Bollywood is comparatively ahead in that regard.
Tamannaah said, “There are basically two types of actors and actresses in the Hindi film industry. Some are more comfortable in arty roles, so they are not always seen in glamorous singing or dancing roles.
But Bollywood offers opportunities for both these types of work. And those who can do both, eventually become superstars.”
On the other hand, how is the South Indian industry? “There is a certain kind of perspective there. It can be called a bit patriarchal, and that perspective is not very positive or complimentary towards women.
But I understood the music-based aspect of it. Star presence is very important in films there. Films are often quite limited in terms of commercial success.”
At the end of her speech, Tamannaah also clarified that these are her personal thoughts. Others’ experiences may be different.
According to her, actresses who have been able to sustain their careers for 10 to 15 years or more have shown equal skill in both acting and dance-song films. Tamannaah is currently awaiting the release of her new film ‘Vvan: Force of the Forest’.
