A road blockade, sit-in programme at the DC’s office and protest rally were held demanding cancellation of the withdrawal order of Md. Sarwar Alam from the post of Sylhet Deputy Commissioner (DC) and reinstatement in his post.
The program was held on Monday under the banner of ‘People of All Levels of Sylhet’ and ‘Sylhet Welfare Organization’.
The protesters alleged that there is an influence of evil forces behind Sarwar Alam’s withdrawal from Sylhet.
They said that various people-friendly initiatives have been implemented during his time and he should be given an opportunity to be kept in charge for at least another year to complete the steps taken in the interest of the citizens.
They also sought the cooperation of the Prime Minister and Sylhet ministers in this regard.
After the brief rally, a protest procession was taken out to Court Point in the city. They gathered there and blocked the road for some time.
Later, the blockade was lifted around 1:15 pm. The speakers announced a stricter program if the demands were not met.
Earlier, a human chain was held on Sunday (June 21) afternoon for the same demand. Even then, a warning of a larger movement and programs like a strike was given if the demands were not met.
Meanwhile, Sarwar Alam was withdrawn from the post of Deputy Commissioner on Sunday in an order signed by Jeti Pru, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration.
The order mentioned that he would be attached as Deputy Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration and it was also stated that this decision would be effective immediately in the public interest.
Recently, Sarwar Alam came into the discussion focusing on the initiative to bring changes in the donation management of Hazrat Shahjalal (Rah.) Shrine and Hazrat Shahparan (Rah.) Shrine.
In particular, the incident of sealing the donation box of the shrine and installing a new donation box and sealing the three historical donation degs created reactions in various quarters.
Moreover, Sarwar Alam was previously discussed throughout Sylhet and the country for his actions against stone looting and various syndicates in Sylhet, especially the issue of black marketing of train tickets.
