Bollywood actress Preity Zinta has approached the Mumbai High Court seeking legal protection against the spread of her distorted pictures and videos on the internet using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
The actress took this drastic step after several ‘deepfake’ pictures of her were leaked on various online platforms including Meta and Google.
In the court, Preity Zinta alleged that these fake photos and videos created using AI technology are seriously damaging her social image.
She mentioned that such unethical use is violating her right to personal privacy and copyright law.
She also claimed that her moral rights under the Copyright Act, 1957 are protected.
A single bench of Justice Abhay Ahuja took cognizance of Preity Zinta’s complaint and allowed her to file a case specifically to ensure her personal rights and protection.
This is not a new legal move by Bollywood against misuse of technology.
Earlier, star actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had approached the court seeking a ban on the use of their images, names and voices without their permission.
Currently, Preity Zinta is busy promoting her upcoming film ‘Batwara 1947’ but has taken an active stand against AI-induced fraud to protect her personal safety and dignity.
