13 sentenced to death in ICT cases

Law Minister Asaduzzaman on Sunday said verdicts have been delivered in seven of the 80 cases filed with the International Crimes Tribunal over crimes against humanity committed during July 2024.

A total of 59 accused have been convicted in the seven cases, including 13 who were sentenced to death, the minister told Parliament.

He disclosed the information in a written reply to a question from Netrokona-5 lawmaker Masum Mustafa during the question-answer session. The reply was placed on the table with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed in the chair.

The law minister said 80 cases had so far been filed with the International Crimes Tribunal in connection with the July 2024 incidents. Of them, verdicts have been pronounced in seven cases, while proceedings in the remaining 73 cases are ongoing.

Of the ongoing cases, 22 are currently at the witness testimony stage, while 51 others remain under investigation, he said.

The minister further said the total number of accused in the crimes against humanity cases stands at 463. Of them, 174 have been arrested and 288 remain absconding.

He also informed Parliament that one accused has died, while another has been acquitted.
