Ecuador bagged an unwanted World Cup record in their Group E match against Curacao on Saturday at Kansas City Stadium.
Ecuador were held to a goalless draw by spirited debutants Curacao to earn their first point at the FIFA World Cup.
Curacao’s goalkeeper Eloy Room made 15 saves, one short of the world record at the FIFA World Cup.
The record for the most saves in a single FIFA World Cup match is held by USA goalkeeper Tim Howard, who made 16 saves against Belgium in 2014.
It is also an unwanted record for Ecuador to have 15 shots on target in a World Cup game without a goal.
Ecuador also broke the record of their previous shots on target in the first half of a World Cup match with six attempts on target.
Their previous record was four shots on target in the first half against Poland in 2006.
The Ecuadorians dominated possession and looked dangerous in the match, but could not find a breakthrough. Ecuador’s John Yeboah carried a ball into the box, but he couldn’t get a clean strike away and Curacao’s goalkeeper dealt with it early in the first half.
Gonzalo Plata also had an opportunity when he reacted quickly to a loose ball and sent a half-volley towards goal from about 20 yards out, but his shot went straight at the goalkeeper, Room.
At the 31st minute mark, Curacao also got a great chance to score when they counter-attacked, but Juninho Bacuna just took too many touches inside the box and Ecuador managed to deny him.
The second half’s story was also the same; Ecuador created chances but could not put one into the net thanks to Room.
