US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen has said he visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka to meet Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, and also to express support for the United States football team following its recent World Cup victory over Australia.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting on Saturday, the ambassador referred to the match, describing it as a “resounding victory” for the United States.
He added that he was encouraging Bangladeshi officials to back the US team as the tournament progresses. “You can never go wrong in the long run in betting on the United States,” he said.
The ambassador’s remarks were made during what he described as a routine diplomatic visit, which comes a day before Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to begin official trips to Malaysia and China aimed at strengthening bilateral and economic cooperation.
Later, speaking to journalists at the Ministry, the Prime Minister’s adviser Humaiun Kobir also characterised the meeting as routine, without indicating any special diplomatic agenda or major policy discussions.
Officials confirmed that the US envoy held discussions with the Foreign Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka, but did not provide further details on the content of the talks.
