Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kajol said that the current government is allowing the judiciary to function independently. He made these remarks yesterday while speaking as the chief guest at the annual general meeting of the Supreme Court Reporters Forum at the Dhaka Club in the capital.
At the event, the Attorney General said that the country’s new government had begun its journey through a free, fair, and impartial election. He mentioned that he has been serving as Attorney General for nearly three months and that, to this day, no one has ever asked him to act under political pressure in any case, in favor of any individual, or in any way that would compromise the state’s judicial system. He said this proves that the current government is allowing the judiciary to work independently.
Mentioning that he was once a journalist, the Attorney General said, “I used to work in journalism. In reporting, the main duty of a reporter is to present the real truth before the people. And justice in the country is delivered through the courts. Everyone must remain careful so that trials are not conducted through the media (media trial).”
He also urged mainstream media to play a role in presenting truthful information to counter misinformation spread through social media and online platforms.
The annual general meeting, chaired by the outgoing president of the Supreme Court Reporters Forum, Masudur Rahman Rana, was attended by invited guests including Aminul Islam, chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal; Barrister Badruddoza Badal, legal affairs secretary of Bangladesh Nationalist Party; Mohammad Ali, secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association; and senior Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir.
