‘Ctg needs citizen co-op to end waterlogging’

Citizens must also take responsibility to make Chattogram free from waterlogging.

City residents should remain aware and refrain from throwing waste into canals and drains said Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain.

The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has continued excavation and cleaning activities in various canals across the city to address waterlogging and keep the drainage system operational.

While inspecting the canal excavation work, the mayor said, “To free Chattogram from the curse of waterlogging, we are implementing a comprehensive programme to restore and activate the city’s canals and drainage network.

Through excavation and cleaning activities, the normal flow of water in the canals is being ensured so that rainwater can drain quickly during the monsoon season.”

He said that although the City Corporation is carrying out regular canal cleaning and excavation activities, the desired results cannot be achieved if garbage and waste continue to be dumped into the canals.

The mayor also said that coordinated efforts by both the City Corporation and residents are necessary to build a clean and livable city.

With public cooperation, it will be easier to reduce waterlogging, protect the environment, and improve urban management.

The City Corporation is gradually carrying out excavation, waste removal, and the restoration of water flow in canals located in different wards to reduce waterlogging during the rainy season.

It is also working to ensure a long-term solution to the city’s waterlogging problem by restoring and maintaining the operational capacity of its major canals.

As part of these efforts, excavation work was inaugurated in five canals on Friday.

The works began at the Dome Canal in the Bahaddarhat area of Ward No. 4 Chandgaon, the Sunnia Madrasa Canal in Ward No. 7 Paschim Sholashahar, the Sadar Canal, the Ananya Residential Canal in the Oxygen area of Ward No. 3 Panchlaish, and the Chashma Canal adjacent to the Textile Bridge in Ward No. 8 Shulakbahar.

Among those present at the event were City Corporation Chief Conservancy Officer Captain Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Deputy Chief Conservancy Officer Pranab Kumar Sharma, the Mayor’s Personal Assistant Ziaur Rahman Zia, City Corporation officials and employees, and local ward leaders.
