Dhaka pushes women in peace processes

Bangladesh has called for increased humanitarian assistance, stronger protection of civilians and greater participation of women in peacebuilding efforts amid escalating global conflicts and humanitarian crises.

Addressing the 2026 Humanitarian Affairs Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to humanitarian principles and international cooperation in responding to growing global challenges.

In her remarks, the state minister highlighted Bangladesh’s efforts to strengthen social protection programmes, enhance disaster preparedness, empower women and support vulnerable communities under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Speaking separately at the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), she underscored the vital role of women in conflict prevention, peacebuilding and post-conflict recovery. She also commended the contributions of Bangladeshi women peacekeepers serving in UN missions around the world.

Expressing concern over the disproportionate impact of armed conflicts on women and children, Shama Obaed Islam urged the international community to address persistent funding shortfalls that continue to hinder humanitarian operations in crisis-affected regions.

She also called for sustained international support to facilitate the safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, describing the protracted displacement crisis as a major humanitarian challenge requiring renewed global attention.

The state minister’s engagements come at a time when humanitarian agencies are warning of rising needs worldwide due to armed conflicts, climate-related disasters and declining aid resources.

As part of her programme in New York, Shama Obaed Islam is scheduled to participate in a high-level panel discussion under the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment and lead the Bangladesh delegation in a bilateral meeting with UN Women Executive Director and UN Under-Secretary-General Sima Bahous at United Nations Headquarters.

Bangladesh’s interventions at the UN forums reflect its continued advocacy for a more effective global humanitarian response, greater inclusion of women in peace processes and stronger international solidarity in addressing refugee and humanitarian crises.
