Lions, Buffalos fight Thursday

England have a chance to avenge the injury they suffered in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia eight years ago. This time, the two teams will face each other again in Group-L of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. If we compare the strength of the two teams, we can say that the match is fight among Lions and Buffalos.

The match will kick-off tomorrow at 2:00am (Bangladesh Standard Time). State-owned television channel BTV, private satellite sports channel T Sports, private satellite channel Somoy TV will telecast the match live.

Luka Modric’s experienced Croatia and Harry Kane-led England – both teams will fight with different generational strengths.

England
Thomas Tuchel’s England are well-organized, high-pressing and technical team. Their defense was almost impenetrable in qualifying. However, the over-reliance on Kane remains a big question mark.
Attack

Harry Kane positioning in the box and finishing are England’s main weapons. Jude Bellingham is the second main attacking force, making late runs into the box from midfield and scoring goals. Saka and Rashford add pace and dribbling from the wings. England’s attack is largely based on a 4-2-3-1 system, with the full-backs moving up and putting more pressure on the opposition.

Midfield
Declan Rice maintains the team’s defensive balance. The midfielders alongside him ensure pressing and ball recovery. This structure strengthens England in transition.

Defence
Pickford is an experienced goalkeeper. While the centre-back pairing is stable, the attacking fluctuations of the full-backs can sometimes create space at the back.

Challenges
Over-reliance on Kane, injury risk and mental pressure are England’s main problems. This pressure is even greater in big matches.

Croatia
This is Luka Modric’s last World Cup. Croatia, under his leadership, are also playing their last World Cup with their golden generation.

Attack
Modric still controls the tempo of the game. Kramaric and Perisic add experience and consistency to the attack. The team mainly plays in slow, controlled buildups.

Midfield
Modric and Kovacic are the lifeblood of the team. With this pair, Croatia can control the match, but injury problems are a big risk.

Defense
With Geverdiol, the center-back line is stronger. In his absence, the defense is weakened. Livakovic brings stability to the goalkeeping.

Challenges
Age, injuries and slow pace in high-intensity matches are Croatia’s main problems. Modric’s minute management is also important.
