Measles death toll climbs to 652 in BD

Four more children have died with symptoms consistent with measles in the 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Sunday, bringing the combined number of confirmed and suspected measles-related deaths in Bangladesh to 652.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest fatalities have been classified as suspected measles deaths.

With the new deaths, the number of suspected measles fatalities has increased to 560, while the number of laboratory-confirmed measles deaths remains unchanged at 92.

During the same period, 1,052 new suspected measles cases were reported across the country, raising the cumulative number of suspected infections to 85,951.

The DGHS also recorded 75 new laboratory-confirmed measles cases, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 10,323.

Health authorities said a total of 70,579 patients with suspected measles have been admitted to hospitals nationwide since March 15. Of them, 66,841 have recovered and been discharged, according to official data.

The latest figures indicate that the outbreak continues to place significant pressure on the country’s healthcare system, with new infections and fatalities being reported regularly.
