Pilot measures launched for cleanliness habits
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a pilot initiative titled ‘City Inspector’ to encourage good civic habits among residents, including keeping surroundings clean, preventing stagnant water to curb Aedes mosquito breeding, and avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal.
The six-month pilot programme, running until December 9, began on Tuesday in Motijheel area (Ward No. 9) under the project ‘Clean Yard’, with funding support from ‘Achhi Bangladesh’ (American Affordable Community Healthcare Initiative). A total of 20 City Inspectors will work in the field during the programme period. The initiative was formally inaugurated at Nagar Bhaban by DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md. Abdur Salam, under the theme “Change ourselves, Dhaka will change.”
Speaking at the event, he said maintaining a clean city is not solely the responsibility of the city corporation, but requires active participation and awareness from citizens. He added that cleanliness in every household, shop and institution could help make the entire city more livable.
He said the City Inspectors will primarily work to raise awareness and help build a culture of cleanliness, while also supporting efforts to reduce dengue risk, air pollution and waterlogging.
Under the pilot, Motijheel has been divided into 10 zones, where inspectors will visit homes, shops and institutions to engage with residents, distribute awareness leaflets and identify potential mosquito breeding sites.
Officials also said citizen behaviour regarding waste disposal will be monitored and assessed, with efforts to encourage responsible practices through community awareness.
If successful, the programme will be gradually expanded to other wards across the city.
