Dr. Sabrina’s publication on ‘Women in STEM Advancing SDGs in Asia’

Dr. Sabrina Moriom Elias, Associate Professor of Life Sciences at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), has been featured in Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Advancing SDGs in Asia, a publication of the Association of Academies and Societies of Sciences in Asia (AASSA).

Launched on May 28, 2026, during the 4th AASSA Symposium and the 58th KAST International Symposium in Seoul, Republic of Korea, the publication recognizes women scientists and STEM leaders contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dr. Elias is featured under SDG 4: Quality Education, with her profile appearing on pages 18 and 19 of the publication, according to a press release.

The publication includes 49 women scientists and STEM leaders from across Asia, with four representatives from Bangladesh. Alongside Dr. Elias, the publication features Dr. Aliya Naheed of icddr,b; Dr. Sharmin Sultana of Jahangirnagar University; and Dr. Kamrun Nahar of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.

The publication was developed under the AASSA Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) initiative to highlight contributions of women in STEM across the region.

Dr. Sabrina was featured for her work in interdisciplinary genomics research combining molecular biology and bioinformatics, and for contributions to scientific capacity building through classroom teaching, research mentorship, outreach activities, and training programs for early-career researchers.

Her work focuses on plant genomics, microbial systems, and STEM education, with applications across agriculture, environment, and biotechnology. She has also contributed to student engagement in advanced research and emerging scientific tools through supervised research and mentorship activities supported by national and international research initiatives.

Selection for the publication was based on nominations submitted through national science academies. Dr. Sabrina was nominated by the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) and selected by AASSA through its review process. The publication highlights women scientists and STEM leaders whose work contributes to research, education, innovation, and capacity building aligned with the SDGs.
