Schools to get new subjects from 2027

A new national curriculum will be introduced in primary and secondary education from 2028, while four new textbooks will be added to Classes IV and VI from the 2027 academic year.

Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon and Prime Minister’s Adviser on Education and Primary and Mass Education Mahdi Amin announced the plan at a press briefing at the Secretariat on the government’s first three-month progress report.

Under the revised framework, Sports and Culture will be introduced as separate compulsory subjects in Class IV, while Technical and Vocational Education and Learning with Happiness will be added for Class VI students.

Officials said the curriculum changes are part of broader reforms aimed at modernising the education system and addressing long-standing gaps.

Mahdi Amin said the education sector had suffered setbacks over the past 16 years, adding that reforms would take time to fully implement.

He said the new subject “Learning with Happiness” would focus on values, ethics, and character development, along with teacher training and classroom support materials.

He also noted that greater emphasis would be placed on third-language learning through updates in the existing curriculum.

Responding to concerns over timing, the education minister said a full curriculum overhaul cannot be completed within a few months.

He confirmed that the new subjects would be introduced in 2027, while the full revised curriculum would take effect from 2028.

“We are proceeding step by step. Four new subjects are being introduced, and broader reforms are already underway,” he said.

The minister also declined to comment on a recent Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) report alleging political influence in university vice-chancellor appointments, saying the government would manage its own affairs.
