91 Bangladeshi fishermen freed from India
Bangladesh has successfully brought back 91 of its fishermen who had been detained in India, following coordinated diplomatic efforts between the two countries.
The repatriation took place today along the international maritime boundary in the Bay of Bengal, where the Bangladesh Coast Guard formally received the fishermen along with four Bangladeshi-owned fishing vessels from the Indian Coast Guard.
Officials said the return was made possible through sustained engagement led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with support from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Ministry of Shipping, Bangladesh Police, local administration, and other relevant agencies.
Authorities noted that Bangladesh consistently supports the return of its nationals held abroad when proper bilateral procedures are followed, including verification and coordination between the respective authorities.
The latest repatriation highlights ongoing cooperation between the maritime agencies of both countries in managing incidents involving fishermen operating in shared waters of the Bay of Bengal.
