Meeting held to boost nuclear medicine capacity

A strategic meeting focusing on demand assessment of cyclotron-based PET radiopharmaceuticals for both public and private PET-CT centres and strengthening the supply system of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) is held at the Alpha Hall of BAEC’s headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Saturday, June 6, 2026.

The meeting aims to enhance and modernise the country’s diagnostic capacity for cancer and other complex diseases by ensuring a continuous and reliable supply of PET radiopharmaceuticals used in PET-CT imaging systems.

Science and Technology Ministry Secretary Md Anwar Hossain attends the meeting as chief guest. In his remarks, he stresses that expanding PET-CT services in line with the growing number of cancer patients is essential, along with ensuring uninterrupted supply of radiopharmaceuticals.

He also highlights the importance of effective coordination and partnership between public and private sectors.

BAEC Member (Planning) Md Hasinur Rahman and Member (Biology) Dr Mahfuza Khan attend the meeting as special guests, while BAEC Chairman Dr M Moinul Islam presides over the session.

Participants note that PET-CT technology plays a crucial role in the early and accurate detection of cancer, heart disease and neurological disorders.

They add that cyclotron-based PET radiopharmaceuticals significantly improve diagnostic precision and support treatment planning.

In the context of growing PET-CT services in the country, ensuring timely, uninterrupted and quality supply of these radiopharmaceuticals is described as a national priority.

Representatives from government and private PET-CT centres, nuclear medicine and imaging specialists, cyclotron technologists, and experts involved in production and supply of radiopharmaceuticals take part in the discussion, along with senior officials of BAEC.

Delegates emphasise coordinated efforts between public and private sectors to ensure efficient supply of cyclotron-based PET radiopharmaceuticals, while also stressing the need to strengthen nuclear medicine services and expand advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities for patients.

Representatives from leading PET-CT service providers, including Evercare Hospital Dhaka, Ibn Sina Diagnostic & Imaging Center, Labaid Cancer Hospital & Super Speciality Centre, Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Medinova Medical Services Ltd. and United Hospital Limited, also participate in the meeting.

The meeting expresses hope that the recommendations will help make the production and supply system of PET-CT radiopharmaceuticals in the country more efficient, coordinated and sustainable.
