Barura Press Club gets new body

Kamruzzaman Jony, editor of Dainik Muktir Lorai have been elected president, while Ilyas Ahmed, Barura correspondent of Dainik Amader Shomoy have been elected general secretary of the Barura Press Club in Cumilla following a peaceful election.

The election of the Barura Press Club was held at Dr. Anis Ul Hasan Hall, located on the third floor of Barura Doctors Community Hospital on Thursday.

Mohsin Mia, Barura correspondent of Dainik Ajker Sangbad, was elected organisational secretary.
Other elected office-bearers include Abdus Salam of Ajkaler Khobor as vice-president, Azizur Rahman of Manabkantha as treasurer, Omar Faruk of Bhorer Dak as office secretary, Sharif Uddin of Amar Shohor as publicity secretary.

Billal Hossain of Cumillar Jomin as literature and cultural affairs secretary, and Taslima Akter of Barura Kantha as executive member.

Voting was held for the positions of president and publicity secretary, where multiple candidates contested. Kamruzzaman Jony secured 11 votes to defeat his nearest rival, Abul Hashem, Barura correspondent of Dainik Inqilab, who received four votes.

In the race for publicity secretary, Sharif Uddin won with 10 votes, while his opponent Yunus of Khoshbas Barta secured five votes.

The election was conducted under the supervision of Shah Alam Shafi, founding president of the Cumilla District Journalists’ Union and executive member of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, who served as election commissioner. Aminul Islam and Foyzul Islam Palash served as members of the election commission.

Following the election, the newly elected leaders pledged to strengthen the Press Club through objective, responsible, and professional journalism while fostering greater unity among its members.
Journalists present at the event said the election represented not only a leadership transition but also a renewed commitment to professional journalism and new opportunities for the media community in Barura.

Earlier in the day, the Press Club’s general meeting was presided over by outgoing president Abul Hashem. All members of the Press Club attended the meeting. The first session began with a recitation from the Holy Quran by Mufti Jamal Hossain Shaji, executive editor of Dainik Barura Kantha.

During the meeting, members approved the admission of 10 new primary members and three associate members. After a break for prayers and lunch, the second session commenced with the election proceedings.
