Govt encourages films on environment issues
Highlighting the growing need for public engagement on environmental issues, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has called for greater use of films and documentaries to raise awareness about climate change and environmental protection.
Speaking at the closing session of the daylong Global Trend and Climate Change Film Festival (GTCF) 2026 at the National Library auditorium in Agargaon on the occasion of World Environment Day on Friday, the minister said films can be a powerful medium for educating people about climate and environmental challenges.
“Films can play a highly effective role in creating awareness about climate change and environmental conservation,” he said.
Swapon noted that the government gives priority under its grant programme to films carrying messages of social transformation and said proposals focusing on climate change and environmental issues would receive serious consideration from the ministry.
He praised the organisers, including GTD Media Production, for selecting environment and climate change as the central theme of the festival and for using cinema as a means of public awareness-building.
The minister also emphasised the importance of institutionalising the initiative by making the festival an annual event.
He encouraged filmmakers to focus on producing high-quality content capable of reaching broader audiences beyond digital platforms.
“These short films and documentaries can play an important role in encouraging people who are still unaware of the harmful impacts of environmental degradation and climate change,” he said.
Assuring continued support from the ministry, Swapon encouraged young filmmakers to pursue their work with confidence, saying that even small-scale productions can have significance beyond national borders.
The festival concluded with discussions on the role of films, storytelling and creative dialogue in increasing climate awareness and promoting a sustainable future.
Speakers and experts attending the event stressed that creative communication can be an effective tool in addressing environmental challenges and encouraging positive behavioural change.
