Clashes between two groups in Shailkupa leave 60 injured
At least 60 people were injured in a series of clashes between supporters of UP member Kafil Member and former UP Chairman Matiar Rahman over longstanding enmity in Bishnupur village of Shailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning (June 4) in Bishnupur village under Umedpur Union of the upazila.
Police and locals said tensions had been simmering between the two groups for a long time over dominance in the area and previous disputes. The situation escalated in the morning following an altercation between supporters of both sides, which quickly turned into violent clashes. During the confrontation, both sides reportedly used local weapons, brick chips, and sticks, leaving at least 60 people injured.
The injured were admitted to Shailkupa Upazila Health Complex and Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital. Several critically injured victims were referred to higher medical facilities for advanced treatment.
Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station, Humayun Kabir Molla, said the clash occurred due to a longstanding dispute between the two groups in Bishnupur village of Umedpur Union.
He added that the situation is now under control, police remain deployed at the scene, and legal action is underway.
