ICC team reviews BCB developments ahead of June 7 polls
A two-member International Cricket Council (ICC) delegation that visited Bangladesh earlier this week will submit its findings and observations to the global governing body following a series of meetings with key stakeholders.
According to an ICC media release, Directors Dr Mohammed Moosajee and Tavengwa Mukuhlani engaged with a range of stakeholders to review recent developments linked to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
The pair arrived in Dhaka on June 1 and held discussions with members of the BCB’s ad-hoc committee, including president Tamim Iqbal. They also met representatives of the BCB election commission, with the elections scheduled for June 7.
The delegation additionally met former and current BCB directors in separate sessions.
Some former board members who had resigned participated in the discussions, while serving directors Asif Akbar and Ahsan Iqbal Chowdhury also met the ICC delegation in a separate meeting on June 2.
Following the meetings, former Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam, who served as BCB president until April, claimed that the delegation was urged not to recognise any election conducted by or under the authority of the ad-hoc committee on June 7 or at any other time.
He also stated that the ad-hoc committee should correct its May 31 press release regarding the ICC visit.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s High Court has rejected a writ petition challenging the legality of the election schedule and voter list for the upcoming BCB elections.
A bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice Md Ashif Hasan issued the order, stating that the petition had not been properly presented before the court.
The petition was filed on May 18, more than a month after the country’s sports ministry dissolved the BCB board of directors on April 7 and appointed an 11-member ad-hoc committee led by former captain Tamim Iqbal on the same day.
