HC clears way for BCB polls

The High Court on Wednesday removed the final legal obstacle to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections scheduled for June 7, allowing the poll process to proceed as planned.

A High Court Division bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice Md Ashif Hasan disposed of a writ petition that questioned the legality of the election schedule and voter list.

The bench passed the order after the petition was marked as “not pressed”, effectively ending the legal challenge against the upcoming elections.

Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal represented the state during the hearing. Advocates Mohammad Hossain, Azim Uddin and Shafikul Islam appeared on behalf of the petitioners, while Barrister Mahin M Rahman represented the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

The writ petition had been filed on May 18 by six individuals led by Armanul Islam Nayon. The petitioners sought the withdrawal of a May 6 letter issued by the BCB Chief Executive Officer to presidents of various district sports associations, who are Deputy Commissioners, requesting them to nominate councillors for the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s general council ahead of the formation of the council and the 2026 board elections.

They also requested the court to stay the election schedule.
The other petitioners were Md Naim Hawlader, Md Enamul Ahsan, Md Abdullah Arko, Akib Javed and Md Rakibul Islam.

With the disposal of the petition, there is now no legal barrier to holding the Bangladesh Cricket Board elections on June 7.
