DMP to File 50% Traffic Cases Against Drivers, Not Owners

In a major policy shift, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has announced that at least 50 percent of traffic violation cases will now be filed directly against drivers instead of vehicle owners.

Additional Commissioner (Traffic) of DMP, Anisur Rahman, disclosed the plan on 2nd June at a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre.

“Currently, most traffic cases are filed against vehicle owners. We are taking an initiative under which at least 50 percent of cases will be filed against drivers,” said Anisur Rahman.

Under the new system, drivers found violating traffic rules will not only have to pay fines but will also have demerit points deducted from their driving licences. The move aims to increase accountability among drivers and ensure that a driving licence truly reflects a person’s competence and behaviour on the road.

The initiative is expected to help employers check a driver’s track record before hiring and promote better road discipline across the capital.
The DMP is rapidly expanding its surveillance network. Currently, around 900 cameras are operational under the DMP, with plans to install AI-powered cameras at 500 strategic points and semi-automated traffic signals at 120 key intersections in the coming year.

This latest announcement comes as the DMP continues to strengthen technology-driven traffic enforcement using CCTV footage and e-traffic prosecution software.
