BRTA warns against overworking drivers

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on Saturday issued a stern warning that strict action will be taken against public transport drivers who exceed the legally prescribed working hours.

In a notice issued from its headquarters, the authority said offenders may face cancellation of driving licences as well as vehicle registration, stressing the need to strictly follow safety regulations.

BRTA said prolonged driving without adequate rest leads to fatigue, drowsiness and loss of control, significantly increasing the risk of road accidents involving drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

Under existing rules, a driver is allowed to operate a vehicle for a maximum of five consecutive hours, followed by a mandatory 30-minute break. After the rest period, driving may continue for up to three more hours, with a total daily limit of eight hours and a weekly limit of 48 hours.

The authority urged both drivers and transport owners to comply with the regulations to help reduce road crashes and ensure safer road conditions across the country.
