RAB member killed by mugger in Sylhet
A member of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) was killed while trying to stop a suspected mugger in Sylhet city on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Emon Acharya, a member of Rab-9, said Manzurul Alam, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police.
According to police, the incident took place around noon in the city’s Topkhana area when a team from Kotwali Police Station was chasing a group of suspected muggers.
Seeing the chase, Emon, who was in plainclothes, stepped in and caught one of the suspects. At one stage, the suspect attacked him with a knife, leaving him critically injured.
He was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead around 1:30pm.
Police said the attacker later fled into a nearby house and took a child hostage. Law enforcers subsequently arrested him.
