Justice protest erupts in Mirpur

A blockade programme is currently underway at Mirpur-10 roundabout in the capital, demanding the strict and public execution of the killer of schoolgirl Ramisa Akter. People from all walks of life have joined the protest.

On Friday after Jummah prayers, residents from different parts of Dhaka joined the demonstration carrying protest processions.

Angry protesters chanted slogans such as “Justice for Ramisa”, “We want hanging”, “Why was my sister killed?” and “Destroy the criminals’ hideouts”. They also demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible.

Demonstrators said the killers must be punished as quickly as possible, with many calling for the sentence to be carried out publicly. They warned that failure to ensure justice would lead to a rise in crime in society.

Police said the dismembered body of Ramisa was recovered from a building in Mirpur on Tuesday morning. The main accused, Sohel Rana, fled the scene, while his wife Swapna Akter was arrested on the spot. Sohel was later arrested and reportedly gave a confessional statement under Section 164 before a court.
