Govt plans wider use of electric vehicles
The government is moving towards large-scale introduction of electric vehicles as part of its strategy to reduce carbon emissions and build an environmentally sustainable transport system in the country.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo disclosed the plan during a meeting with International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Director for Bangladesh Max Tuñón at the ministry office, according to a PID handout issued on Wednesday.
He said the government is simultaneously strengthening renewable energy expansion, industrial waste treatment and plastic recycling initiatives to address growing environmental challenges and support green development.
The minister highlighted the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy, under which producers will be encouraged to take responsibility for plastic waste management and recycling.
He also said efforts are underway to ensure wider installation of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) in industries to reduce water pollution and improve industrial waste management standards.
To reduce pressure on conventional electricity generation, the government has also taken initiatives to install large-scale solar power systems across the country and promote the use of renewable energy.
During the meeting, both sides discussed strengthening cooperation on plastic pollution control, climate financing, carbon credit mechanisms, biodiversity conservation, circular economy practices and sustainable development goals.
ILO Country Director Max Tuñón expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Bangladesh on environmental protection and stressed the importance of “Just Transition” policies to ensure environmentally sustainable economic growth without affecting workers’ rights and livelihoods.
He also appreciated the Environment Ministry’s initiatives to maintain international standards in waste management and recycling and emphasised coordinated efforts with development partners and non-government organisations.
