BSF firing at Sylhet border, BGB on alert position

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) immediately responded after the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire at the Sonarhat border area in Gowainghat upazila of Sylhet.

According to a BGB press release issued on Tuesday (May 19), the incident occurred on Monday (May 18) afternoon. BGB members reportedly retaliated in a strong and coordinated response, after which the situation was quickly brought under control.

The press release said the border situation is now calm and normal, and no casualties were reported.
Following the incident, additional alert measures have been enforced in the area. BGB headquarters stated that forces are fully prepared to handle any unforeseen situation.

It was reported that BSF members opened fire without any prior provocation in the Sonarhat border area in the late afternoon on Monday. In response, members of the 48th BGB Battalion fired back to defend the territory, according to the statement.

Authorities said increased patrolling and surveillance have been put in place to prevent further tensions.
After the incident, a special awareness meeting was held with local public representatives and residents in the border area. Locals were instructed not to cross the border illegally or engage in any unauthorized activities.
