RAB set for overhaul under new law
The government is planning a major overhaul of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), including a possible change in its name and legal structure, Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat, Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed said the elite force would no longer operate in its current form as the government is preparing a comprehensive law to regulate its activities.
He said RAB has so far been operating under provisions of the Armed Police Battalions Ordinance, but the proposed legislation would clearly define the force’s structure, responsibilities and operational limits.
Referring to long-standing criticism over alleged human rights violations, Zahed said the new framework aims to remove past “risks and concerns” associated with the force.
He also indicated that the government is considering renaming the elite unit, echoing recent remarks made by the home minister.
Despite criticism, Zahed defended the need for a specialised force to tackle terrorism and organised crime, saying RAB had capabilities and training beyond those of the conventional police force.
He further said the interim government would not protect loan defaulters or tolerate corruption, alleging that previous abuses by RAB and large-scale financial irregularities took place under the patronage of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
