Local Govt: CEC stresses fair, credible polls
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has emphasised that political parties must take a responsible role to ensure that local government elections are violence-free and more
participatory.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new committee of the Reporters Forum for Election and Democracy (RFED) at the Election Training Institute (ETI) in Agargaon on May 18, the CEC called for understanding and cooperation among political parties to establish a sustained culture of free and fair elections, rather than focusing on isolated successes.
“The beauty of democracy lies not in one-sided praise or criticism of elections, but in respecting all perspectives,” he said.
Nasir Uddin stressed that the Election Commission has acted impartially, working in accordance with law, conscience, and accountability.
“Our aim has been to organise free, fair, and credible elections, ensuring equal opportunity for all candidates,” he said.
He added that the interim government had provided full independence and cooperation, with no interference in the commission’s work.
Highlighting upcoming local government elections, the CEC noted that while these polls are conducted without party symbols, political parties have already started announcing candidate nominations, raising concerns about potential conflicts.
He warned that past local elections have often been marred by violence and loss of life.
The CEC urged political parties to engage in dialogue and reach mutual understanding to ensure that local elections are conducted properly and safely.
He emphasized increasing training and awareness among political parties, voters, journalists, and all concerned stakeholders.
The CEC said work is underway to amend the code of conduct and operational rules for local government elections.
After completing these preparations and consulting with the government, the election schedule will be announced, he said.
