Prof Shariful Karim new CoU VC

Comilla University (CoU) has appointed Professor Dr M M Shariful Karim of its English Department as the ninth vice-chancellor, making him the first faculty member from the university to assume the post.
The appointment was announced through a gazette notification issued on Thursday by the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education. The notification was signed by Assistant Secretary Sultan Ahmed.

According to the notification, the appointment was made with the approval of the President, who also serves as the Chancellor, under Section 10(1) of the Comilla University Act, 2006.

The tenure of the vice-chancellor will remain effective for four years from the date of joining or until his retirement, whichever comes earlier.

As per the notification, Prof Karim will receive salary and benefits equivalent to his current position. He will serve as the chief executive officer of the university and will be required to reside on campus full-time. The Chancellor retains the authority to cancel the appointment at any time if deemed necessary.

Reacting to his appointment, Prof Karim said his primary goal would be to ensure all necessary facilities for students’ academic activities.

“I will carry out the responsibility entrusted to me with sincerity. I seek cooperation from all to advance the university,” he said, expressing gratitude to the government.

He also said the administration would gradually work to address major student concerns, including accommodation shortages, transport problems and food subsidies.
