DB arrests 3 over fake currency

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) has dismantled a counterfeit currency racket with the arrest of three individuals and the recovery of fake notes worth Tk 34 lakh along with printing equipment during separate operations in Uttara Purbo area and Gazipur city.

The arrested persons are Md Mijibur Rahman (38), Md Dulal Mirdha (40) and Md Mamun (25).
According to DB Uttara Division, Md Mijibur Rahman was first detained on Wednesday around 12:30pm from the Samabaya Bazar (BDR) Market under Uttara Purbo Police Station following a tip-off. Police recovered Tk 4 lakh in counterfeit notes and Tk 40,000 in cash from him.

Based on his interrogation, DB teams later conducted a follow-up raid at Basan Police Station area in Gazipur around 2:05pm, where Dulal Mirdha and Mamun were arrested.

During the raid, officers seized Tk 30 lakh in fake currency along with equipment used for producing counterfeit notes, including a laptop, colour printers, gold foil paper, security tags, watermark papers, printed and blank note sheets, glue containers, cutters and watermark dies.

Police said the group was part of an inter-district counterfeit currency syndicate involved in producing and distributing fake notes across Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and nearby districts.

Investigators further said the suspects had planned to circulate counterfeit money ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, targeting cattle markets and busy commercial hubs.

Authorities also confirmed that multiple cases are already pending against the arrested individuals in different districts.

A case has been filed under the Special Powers Act at Uttara Purbo Police Station, said Deputy Commissioner Md Naseruddin of DMP Media and Public Relations Division.
