‘Mango harvesting calendar not to be implemented’
It is decided not to implement a mango harvesting calendar this season in Chapainawabganj, allowing farmers and traders to harvest and market mangoes once the fruits naturally ripen on the trees, according to the speakers.
The decision was taken on Monday afternoon during a discussion meeting held at the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Chapainawabganj, following consultations with mango growers, entrepreneurs, agricultural experts, and representatives of various mango-related organizations.
Participants at the meeting said that mangoes in Chapainawabganj have traditionally been harvested only after reaching natural maturity, a practice that has been followed for generations. They expressed support for continuing the same approach this year.
The meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Abu Saleh Md. Musa Janggi. Among those present were Dr. Yasin Ali, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension; Dr. Sharaf Uddin, Chief Scientific Officer of the Regional Horticulture Research Center; local mango entrepreneurs; and leaders of different mango associations.
During the meeting, stakeholders also discussed the need for maintaining a uniform mango weight standard across the country. Officials said initiatives would be taken at the divisional level involving Chapainawabganj and neighboring mango-producing districts to address the issue.
Speaking after the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Abu Saleh Musa Jangi said traders would be permitted to harvest and market mangoes once they are ripe.
