DSCC to build 18 towers for cleaners
The corporation has undertaken a long-term plan to improve the living standards of sanitation workers by constructing 18 modern multi-storey residential buildings in different colonies across the capital, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam has said.
He made the remarks while speaking to sanitation workers and local residents after visiting the Dayaganj sanitation workers’ colony in the capital on Wednesday.
The DSCC administrator said the existing residential buildings had become highly risky and dilapidated. He added that residents would be relocated to safe alternative accommodation before demolition and construction work begins.
“We will be able to complete the construction of modern housing more quickly if residents cooperate promptly,” he said.
According to the administrator, plans to build 18 multi-storey buildings in Mironjilla, Dhalpur, Ganaktuli, Dayaganj, Wari and Postogola colonies have already been sent to the ministry for approval. Construction work will begin soon after approval is granted.
Highlighting the contribution of sanitation workers, Abdus Salam said equal civic facilities would be ensured for all residents regardless of religion or ethnicity. The housing projects will also include temples and playgrounds for children. He further said sanitation workers would be allowed to pay outstanding electricity bills in instalments, while the DSCC would take initiatives to settle gas bills on their behalf.
Regarding waste management during the upcoming Eid al-Adha, he instructed workers to remove sacrificial waste within eight hours and announced special rewards for those demonstrating outstanding performance.
The administrator also urged city dwellers to become more responsible in maintaining cleanliness, saying that it would not be possible for sanitation workers alone to keep the city clean unless citizens became more aware.
He noted that indiscriminate dumping of waste into drains and canals was one of the main causes of waterlogging in the capital.
Among others, MP Hamidur Rahman Hamid, local representatives and senior DSCC officials were present during the visit.
