Death-row convict held after 25 yrs on the run
Police have arrested Kalam Mia, 43, a death-row convict in a murder case filed with Pakundia Police Station in Kishoreganj, after he had been on the run for 25 years.
He was arrested from the Shahjahanpur area of the capital on Monday night, May 11, with the assistance of RAB.
He was sent to jail through a court on Tuesday.
Kalam is the son of late Shamsuddin of Charlakhshia village in Pakundia upazila.
Confirming the arrest, Pakundia Police Station Officer-in-Charge S.M. Arifur Rahman said the death-row convict, who had remained fugitive for 25 years, was arrested and sent to jail through the court.
He described the arrest as a major success for Pakundia police.According to police, Kalam stabbed Sohel Mia, a man from the same village, to death in 2001.
Following the incident, Sohel’s father, Jasim Uddin, filed a murder case with Pakundia Police Station.In 2010, a court sentenced Kalam to death in the case. He had been hiding since the killing, police said.
Recently, an arrest warrant was issued against Kalam as a fugitive death-row convict. Acting on the warrant, Pakundia police arrested him with RAB’s assistance.
