Govt drives education reform, skills push
Bangladesh must prioritise building a skilled, responsible and capable young generation through a modern and inclusive education system to achieve its development and democratic goals, Prime Minister’s Education Adviser Mahdi Amin said.
He made the remarks while speaking at a national workshop titled “Transforming Higher Education in Bangladesh: Roadmap to Sustainable Excellence” held at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the University of Dhaka on Tuesday.
Describing education as the backbone of national progress, he said the country’s large youth population should be turned into a demographic dividend through proper training, values-based learning and technological competence.
He called on academics, policymakers and experts to contribute their knowledge and innovation in strengthening democratic governance and ensuring public empowerment.
Highlighting the historical role of the University of Dhaka, he said the institution had been at the centre of key political movements in the country, including the recent July uprising.
The adviser also outlined the government’s broader reform agenda, saying a technology-driven welfare system is being developed to improve public services. He mentioned plans for digita farmer cards to deliver agricultural subsidies directly, E-health cards for improved healthcare access, and expanded use of weather forecasting tools to support agriculture.
He further said the government plans to enhance teacher training and digital capacity through initiatives such as “One Teacher, One Tab,” aimed at modernising classroom teaching and improving skills.
According to him, the goal is to build a globally competitive generation through a digitised curriculum and upgraded education infrastructure.
The workshop, organised by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman around 11am. UGC Chairman Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed presided over the session and presented a crest to the Prime Minister.
