US-killed student Bristy’s first janaza held

The first janaza of Bangladeshi student Bristy, who was killed in the United States(US), was held with participation from members of the local Bangladeshi community.

A representative from the Bangladesh Consulate in Miami was also present at the funeral prayer. Press Minister of the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, Golam Mortoza shared the information in a social media post.

He said that after the janaza, Bristi’s body was handed over to the Tampa funeral authorities. The body is scheduled to be flown to Bangladesh on Thursday from Orlando International Airport aboard an Emirates flight. After a transit and flight change in Dubai, it is expected to arrive in Dhaka at 8:40am on May 9.

A representative from the Bangladesh Consulate in Miami will be present at the Orlando airport during the repatriation process.

The Bangladesh Embassy in Washington, in coordination with the Miami Consulate and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is overseeing the entire process.

Earlier, the body of another Bangladeshi PhD student, Jamil Ahmed Limon, was also repatriated to Dhaka on May 4. Authorities said the government is bearing all expenses for bringing back the bodies of both students.

Following Limon’s arrival, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid received the body at the airport on the instructions of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and handed it over to the family.

On April 16, both Limon and Bristi, students of the University of South Florida, went missing. Their disappearance was later reported to the university by a friend. Police later recovered Limon’s mutilated body on April 24, while parts of Bristi’s body were found two days later.

Authorities have arrested US citizen Hisham Abughurbah, Limon’s roommate, on suspicion of involvement in the killings, and the trial process has begun.
