PM reaffirms zero tolerance on corruption
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman reiterated his government’s zero-tolerance policy against corruption during a meeting with Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat on Thursday.
Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon said the meeting focused on measures to curb corruption and strengthen good governance in the country. After the meeting, Iftekharuzzaman told reporters that TIB placed several recommendations before the Prime Minister on improving governance and intensifying anti-corruption efforts.
He said the Prime Minister responded positively and assured necessary steps for implementation.
The TIB chief said discussions also covered reforms and restructuring of key institutions, particularly the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), to make them more effective.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to combating corruption, Iftekharuzzaman said Bangladesh is keen to send a strong message to the international community about its uncompromising stance against graft.
During the meeting, TIB also proposed hosting the 2028 International Anti-Corruption Conference in Bangladesh to strengthen the country’s global image. The Prime Minister assured support for the initiative, subject to cabinet approval.
Iftekharuzzaman noted that the conference is held every two years and only Malaysia, Thailand and South Korea have previously hosted it in Asia. He expressed hope that Bangladesh could successfully organise the event in 2028.
Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani was present.
