Army to return to barracks by June
All army personnel will be withdrawn from the field by next June. According to sources from the Core Committee meeting on law and order, the final withdrawal will begin from June 6.
This decision was made at the first Core Committee meeting held on Tuesday, May 5. The meeting was held with the aim of reviewing the country’s law and order situation and determining future courses of action after the new government took charge.
In the first phase, army personnel will be brought back from the remote districts of the country. Afterwards, the withdrawal of troops from divisional cities and major districts will also be completed in stages. The entire process is planned to be finished within June.
It has been learned that approximately 17,000 army personnel are currently on duty at the field level. The Ministry of Defence had already taken the initiative to gradually return them to their respective units due to their prolonged deployment.
The meeting, chaired by the Home Minister, was attended by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Director General of BGB, and senior officials of various forces.
At the nearly two-and-a-half-hour-long meeting, discussions were held not only on the army withdrawal but also on the overall law and order situation of the country, curbing extortion, anti-drug operations, and some structural changes in the police force.
