Bangladesh women on hat-trick SAFF mission

The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Championship will be held in Goa, India from May 25. Bangladesh Women’s Football team will leave for Bangkok, Thailand today to prepare for the upcoming SAFF Women’s Championship, the most prestigious football tournament for the female booters of South Asian Region.

Bangladesh will leave for Goa from Thailand. For this, the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) arranged a press conference at the conference room in BFF House on Wednesday. Dhaka Bank Public Limited Company is the sponsor of Bangladesh Women’s Football team.

Bangladesh Women’s Football team are the two-time consecutive champions of the SAFF Women’s Championship. They are also the reigning champions of this football meet.

Therefore, this tournament is a hat-trick title mission. For this, the BFF has organized two weeks of training in Thailand and warm-up matches with two club teams of Thailand. Bangladesh Women’s Football team’s midfielders Sapna Rani and Munki Akhter have been dropped due to their poor performance. Nabiran Khatun is also not in the team due to injury.

Sabina Khatun was the captain of Bangladesh’s first two SAFF Championship victories. Since the last SAFF victory, Krishna Rani, Masura Parvin, Sanjida Akhter and Sumaya Matsushima have been out of the team

due to distance with Head Coach of Bangladesh Women’s Football team Peter Butler. This time, Bangladesh Women’s Football team are going to retain the SAFF Women’s Championship title without them. Sweden expatriate Anika, who played in Australia, is in the squad.

Mahfuza Akhter Kiron, Chairperson of the BFF Women’s Wing, said at the press conference on Wednesday, “Our goal is to become a hat-trick champions. For that, necessary preparations have been made. BFF has given importance to this tournament.”

Incidentally, Bangladesh Women’s Football team have been drawn in Group-B with hosts India and Maldives in the six-team draw. Bangladesh women’s first match is on against Maldives women on May 28. Bangladesh women’s opponent in the last match of the Group-B are India women on May 31.

Bhutan Women’s Football team, Nepal Women’s Football team and Sri Lanka Women’s Football team are in Group-A.

The top two teams from the two groups will play in the semi-finals on June 3. The winners of the semi-finals will get the tickets of the final. The final will take place on June 5. The winning team of the final will be the champions of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026.
