‘32 killed in Shapla Chattar crackdown’
Evidence has been found confirming that 32 people were killed at Shapla Chattar during the 2013 crackdown, according to Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam.
He said the investigation conducted by the International Crimes Tribunal is now in its final stage, and a complete report is expected to be submitted by 7 June.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the chief prosecutor stated that 32 deaths have been confirmed at the scene in Dhaka, while additional fatalities have also been identified in other locations, including Narayanganj and Chattogram. He added that investigators have collected substantial evidence related to the incident.
He further alleged that, in addition to members of law enforcement agencies, individuals at higher levels of the then government may have been involved. He also claimed that there is evidence suggesting some individuals provided financial support linked to the operation.
The investigation is also expected to examine individuals associated with political organisations, including student and youth wings.
Officials said the probe has been ongoing for the past one to one-and-a-half years, during which efforts have been made to verify the identities of the deceased.
The incident refers to the night of 5 May 2013, when a rally organised by Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel was dispersed during a joint operation by law enforcement agencies.
According to allegations, electricity was cut off around 11:00 pm, after which police, RAB, and BGB launched an operation using sound grenades, live ammunition, and batons, resulting in casualties and the dispersal of protesters.
The case involves several high-profile accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Mohiyuddin Khan Alamgir, former Inspector General of Police Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, and former DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed, among others.
