Over 1.24cr sacrificial animals available for Eid-ul-Azha
The Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammad Aminur Rashid has said that more than 1.24 crore sacrificial animals are available in the country for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
He made the statement at a press briefing held at the ministry on Sunday, adding that no animals will be imported this year for the occasion.
Aminur Rashid also said border cattle markets will remain closed as part of the decision to avoid imports, similar to last year.
The minister confirmed that over 3,600 cattle markets will be set up across the country, including 27 in Dhaka city. Of these, 16 markets will operate under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 11 under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
He added that cattle markets in the capital will only be allowed at designated locations, and no roadside markets will be permitted to ensure smooth traffic flow.
He further stated that the use of illegal fattening injections and steroids in livestock is strictly prohibited. The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) will conduct drives nationwide to seize and destroy such banned drugs.
According to the minister, veterinary teams will be deployed at all cattle markets to provide emergency treatment to animals. He also expressed hope that the supply of sacrificial animals is sufficient and prices will remain affordable for buyers.
The government has also taken steps to prevent extortion in cattle markets and on transport routes carrying sacrificial animals by issuing instructions to law enforcement agencies. Additionally, no tax or fee will be charged for online animal purchases, while such charges will apply only for direct purchases from cattle markets.
