DMP vows swift crackdown on criminals
Acting Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md Sarwar on Saturday said police will move quickly to stop any attempt by criminals to re-establish their networks in the capital.
Speaking at the inauguration of a new police camp at Karwan Bazar, he said the list of top criminals is being updated regularly to keep crime under control.
He noted that although there are currently no major listed top criminals like in the past, their associates and those seeking to gain influence in the underworld remain under strict surveillance.
Sarwar said DMP is working jointly with the Detective Branch and Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit to ensure law and order in the Karwan Bazar area. He said the newly launched police camp will help curb extortion and other criminal activities there, with police members remaining on duty round the clock.
According to him, immediate measures will be taken based on information from local traders, while extra police force will be deployed whenever required.
The acting commissioner also said special anti-extortion and anti-drug drives are already underway in different parts of the capital and several suspects have been arrested.
He added that the operations will continue alongside stronger intelligence monitoring.
Responding to a question, Sarwar said victims can directly contact the concerned Assistant Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner or senior crime division officials if any police station declines to register a case.
He also warned that any allegation against police members will be properly investigated and action will be taken if misconduct is found.
Sarwar expressed optimism that the intensified operations would help bring down crime in Dhaka significantly.
