World Press Freedom Day today

Bangladesh is set to observe World Press Freedom Day today through a series of programmes highlighting the importance of independent journalism, media credibility and public trust.

To mark the day, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will organise a discussion at the Department of Film and Publications in the morning, with Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan as chief guest and State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury as special guest. Leaders of major journalist bodies, editors and newspaper owners are also expected to attend.

Separately, Transparency International Bangladesh and UNESCO will jointly host an interactive discussion in Dhanmondi on media independence and democratic accountability.

Observed globally on May 3 since 1993, World Press Freedom Day this year comes amid growing concern over misinformation, political pressure, self-censorship and declining public confidence in professional journalism.

According to UNESCO, strengthening independent media, ensuring journalists’ safety and rebuilding public trust remain crucial for protecting freedom of expression and democratic values in Bangladesh and worldwide.
