Minister flags painful steps over economic strain

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday cautioned that Bangladesh is likely to face at least two more difficult years before the economy stabilises, indicating that hard and potentially unpopular policy decisions lie ahead. “We need a buffer for the next two years.

The period ahead will be challenging. We will have to take a number of steps, some of which may not be popular. But difficult times demand difficult decisions,” he said.

He made the remarks while taking part in the discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s speech in parliament. The finance minister also called for cooperation from opposition parties in the national interest to support efforts to revive the economy.

“We must work together to overcome the situation. Our leadership is strong, and the vision is clear,” he added.

Khosru acknowledged that the path to recovery will not be easy but expressed confidence that Bangladesh can navigate through the challenges with collective support.
