Lightning strikes kill 6 in 5 dists

A young man named Sourav went to tie his cow in a nearby field so it could graze. At that moment, a loud thunderclap struck, and lightning hit the area.

Six people were killed by lightning strikes across different districts of the country on Wednesday (April 29). Among the victims, two died in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur, while one person each died in Mymensingh, Rajbari, Patuakhali, and Rangpur. Details from local correspondents are as follows:
Mymensingh:

A young man was killed by lightning while fishing in the Rangsa River in Tarakanda upazila. The incident occurred around noon in the Chourabari area of Gabargati village under Galagaon union.

The deceased, Md. Saddam Hossain (28), was the son of Hamed Ali from the same village. Alongside farming, he earned his livelihood through fishing.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Tanvir Ahmed confirmed the incident. He said that around 1:30 pm, Saddam went fishing in the river near his home. When it suddenly started raining, he was struck by lightning and died on the spot. Locals later recovered the body and brought it home. Police have been sent, and an unnatural death case is under process.

Jamalpur:
Two people-Md. Shamim Mia (37) and Sagar Islam (18)-were killed in separate lightning strikes in Islampur upazila. The incidents occurred in Gaibandha and Sapdhari unions in the morning.

Shamim Mia, son of Mohammad Ali Member from Morakandi Uttar Bari village, died while fishing in the Dashani River. Sagar Islam, a construction worker and son of Swadhin Islam from Chuniyapara in Dewanganj upazila, died while working on a road in Indullamari area.

Rajbari:
A man named Suman Ahmed was killed by lightning in Ramjatkol village under Mizanpur union. His four-year-old daughter, who was in his arms, was thrown aside by the impact but survived. The incident took place around 7:00 am.

Suman, son of Saddik Mondol, worked at an NGO and had been staying at home for about a month. He was heading to a nearby shop with his daughter when the lightning struck. The child sustained minor injuries and is now safe. OC Uttam Kumar Ghosh confirmed the incident.

Rangpur:
A housewife named Sahera Begum (40), wife of Mojibur Hossain, died in a lightning strike in Kazipara village under Sayer union of Taraganj upazila. The incident occurred around noon while she had gone outside to collect firewood for cooking during intermittent rainfall.

Union Parishad member Monsur Pathowari and OC Ruhul Amin confirmed the incident, stating that police have been dispatched.

Patuakhali:
In Rangabali upazila, a young man named Sourav Majumdar (22) died after being struck by lightning while trying to tie his cow during a Kalbaishakhi storm in Char Ganga village of Borobaishdia union around 9:00 am.

He was critically injured on the spot and later taken to Golachipa Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Family members said Sourav had become a father just a week ago, and his sudden death has left his family in deep uncertainty. The area is mourning the loss.

OC Md. Jasim Uddin confirmed the incident and said police have been sent to the scene, and further action will be taken according to the family’s wishes.
