DU student found dead; teacher held

A Dhaka University theatre and performance studies department teacher was arrested on Sunday after a female student of the department was found dead in her own house in the capital’s Badda.

The police and the family members of the student suspected that she might have committed suicide.
The deceased was identified as Munira Mahzabin Mimo, a MA student, while the arrestee was Sudip Chakroborthy, an associate professor of the department.

The victim’s father filed an abetment of suicide case against Sudip with the Badda police station, and the accused was shown arrested in the case, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner for the Badda zone Md Asaduzzaman.

Quoting victim’s family members, the police said that Mimo lived with her parents
in Badda and used to keep her room’s door open. The family members knocked on the door repeatedly as they found it locked after the Fajr prayers on Sunday.

When they did not receive any response from inside, they broke the door and found the body hanging from a ceiling fan, according to the police.

The police recovered the body after receiving information and sent it to Dhaka Medical College Hospital mortuary for an autopsy, said Asaduzzaman.

The family members of Mimo suspected that the teacher might have been in a relationship with her and abetted her to commit suicide, he added.

Earlier in the day, the police detained Sudip for questioning and later showed him arrested in the case, he mentioned, adding that further legal actions were underway.

The Dhaka University theatre and performance studies department on Sunday issued a condolence message expressing profound shock at the demise of Mimo.
