Govt, WHO stress urgent need to curb NCD burden
The government and the World Health Organization (WHO) have stressed the need for stronger protection against noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) for all Bangladeshis, including those living abroad, the UN agency said.
According to WHO, with strong leadership from the government of Bangladesh and technical support from the agency, every Bangladeshi—regardless of location—can be better protected from NCDs and live longer, healthier lives.
In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) last week briefed more than 80 Bangladesh missions worldwide on addressing NCDs among millions of Bangladeshis living overseas.
The move builds on a 2025 development when 35 ministries signed a joint declaration to strengthen coordinated national action on NCD prevention and control.
WHO noted that NCDs account for 71% of all deaths in Bangladesh. The risk is considered even higher among expatriates due to demanding working conditions, limited access to healthcare, and lifestyle-related factors.
The consultation will support the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in developing a dedicated NCD workplan, with Bangladesh missions already providing practical recommendations for implementation.
