Readers’ Voice: Stop Early Marriage

I am writing to draw attention to the persistent issue of child marriages in Bangladesh.

Despite laws and growing awareness, this harmful practice continues to affect thousands of young girls, especially in rural and underprivileged areas.

Child marriage deprives children of their basic rights, including education, health, and the freedom to make choices about their own lives.

Many young girls are forced into early marriages due to poverty, social pressure, and deeply rooted cultural traditions.

As a result, they often face serious health risks, domestic violence, and limited opportunities for personal growth.

Although the government has introduced laws to restrict underage marriages, their implementation remains weak.

There is an urgent need for stricter enforcement of these laws, along with nationwide awareness campaigns to educate communities about the negative consequences of child marriage.

Education plays a crucial role in addressing this issue. When families understand the value of educating their daughters, they are less likely to marry them off at an early age.

Additionally, support programmes for poor families can help reduce the economic burden that often leads to such decisions.

I request the concerned authorities, NGOs, and society as a whole to work together to eliminate child marriages and protect the future of our children.
